Suspects Charged in Plot Against Metropolitan Tikhon

Ukrainian citizen Denis Popovich and Russian citizen Nikita Ivankovich have received a final version of charges in the case over an assassination attempt against Metropolitan Tikhon, a source familiar with the investigation told the news agency RIA Novosti. Both men have been placed on the Federal Financial Monitoring Service's list of terrorists and extremists.

The source said the defendants are now reviewing the case materials and do not admit guilt.

Detention extended

The Moscow City Court ruled on August 10 to extend the men's pretrial detention.

Popovich and Ivankovich were detained in February 2025 on suspicion of preparing an attack on Metropolitan Tikhon. Investigators believe the pair intended to detonate a homemade explosive device on the grounds of the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow but did not manage to carry it out.

In May, it emerged that the men had been charged under three additional articles, and the case was merged with the earlier one.
