Technology publication SlashGear has explained why modern smartphones feature prominent rear camera bumps, attributing the protruding design to essential camera hardware requirements.

Journalists at the outlet highlighted that handset manufacturers generally construct slim phone bodies, yet include a heavy protrusion on the back panel. This design feature is most frequently found on devices in the middle and upper price categories.

Although many consumers view the bump as an ugly feature, authors at the publication clarified that the component is necessary to fit modern camera modules inside a slim chassis. Specialists noted that increasing the physical area of lenses and sensors allows them to capture more light, which in turn improves image quality.

Digital camera sensors contain millions of light-sensitive pixels that rely on optical glass to focus incoming light. Larger sensors require proportionally larger lens elements positioned at a precise focal distance. As mobile phone manufacturers pushed for overall device frames to become thinner over the past decade, the depth required for advanced camera optics surpassed the thickness of the handset body.

Optical zoom and camera design

The report stated that lenses supporting optical zoom require the largest amount of internal space. While engineers have developed methods to arrange these components relatively compactly, hiding them entirely inside the handset chassis remains impossible.

SlashGear noted that completely concealing these optical components would require reinventing the camera mechanism itself, leaving consumers to accept the rear protrusion for the time being. In photography, optical zoom uses physical lens movement to adjust focal length without losing image clarity, unlike digital zoom, which crops images using software algorithms.

To mitigate the height of camera bumps, some manufacturers have experimented with folded optics or periscope systems that reflect light inside the phone casing. However, even these advanced optical layouts still demand dedicated internal depth to accommodate high-resolution sensor arrays and physical stabilization hardware.

Shift away from metal casings

In late August, technology website How-To Geek separately explained why manufacturers have almost completely stopped producing smartphones with metal bodies. The publication explained that the transition occurred partly because metal creates signal interference with the wireless communications of mobile devices.

Early smartphone generations frequently featured aluminum unibody designs valued for structural rigidity and heat dissipation. Modern smartphones have largely replaced metal backings with toughened glass or composite plastics. This transition allows signals for 5G cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and inductive wireless charging coils to pass through the enclosure without attenuation.
