For years, conventional health advice cautioned that blue wavelength light emitted by digital displays suppresses the body's production of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the brain that helps regulate circadian rhythms and signals when it is time to sleep.
Scientific Studies on Sleep and Blue Light
Journalists at BGR noted that recent research papers on screen light produce contradictory conclusions rather than clear evidence of harm. In particular, a scientific paper published in 2020 in the journal Sleep Advances failed to demonstrate that glasses designed to block blue light provide any measurable sleep benefit.
Sleep Advances is a peer-reviewed medical publication focusing on sleep health. The lack of evidence for protective eyewear calls into question whether display light alone is responsible for night-time rest disruption.
A second study, published in 2024 in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, underscored the multi-faceted nature of human sleep. Researchers cautious about drawing singular conclusions suggested that blue light glow is not the only factor that may interfere with melatonin production.

The 2024 study pointed out that active mental engagement shortly before bedtime makes falling asleep significantly more difficult. People who spend the evening watching videos or playing games on their smartphones experience heightened stimulation prior to rest.
