Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris told local officials on Samos that transfers of migrants to the island are strictly for registration.
Plevris reiterated a pledge that the Ministry of Migration and Asylum will avoid placing any new burden on Eastern Aegean islands. He stated that migrants brought from Crete to Samos will undergo administrative processing and will not remain in the island facility.
Official figures presented during the meeting showed that Samos recorded approximately 2,400 migrant arrivals up to 31 August. Over the same period, about 2,900 departures took place, leaving the island with a net negative balance of arrivals and departures.
Plevris assured municipal representatives that any transfers arriving from Crete would be paired with corresponding departures to facilities on the Greek mainland. He added that occupancy levels at the Samos facility will be kept low to protect the local community from added pressure.
Island geography and local administration
Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, separated from Turkey by the narrow Mycale Strait. Eastern Aegean islands experienced significant pressure from migration flows in previous years, leading authorities to establish designated reception and identification centers.
Crete, located in the southern Aegean Sea, is Greece's largest island. Migrants arriving in Crete are transferred to established centers such as Samos for formal registration and administrative management before final relocation to mainland Greece.
Under Greek local government administration, Samos is divided into two municipal districts, Eastern Samos and Western Samos, both falling under the North Aegean regional authority.
Meeting participants and institutional cooperation
The meeting included Eastern Samos Mayor Paraskevas Papageorgiou, Western Samos Mayor Themistoklis Papatheofanous, Samos Deputy Regional Governor Elissaios Mavratzotis, and New Democracy MP for Samos Christodoulos Stefanadis. New Democracy is Greece's governing centre-right political party.
Also attending were Spyridon Stathoulis, the Secretary General for the Reception of Asylum Seekers at the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, former Eastern Samos Mayor Giorgos Stantzos, and municipal councillor Christos Chatzichristodoulou.
Officials at the meeting confirmed the necessity of ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, the Region, and the two Samos municipalities. They agreed that continuous coordination remains essential to manage migration effectively and safeguard local communities.
