The Russian Navy's Project 677 Lada-class diesel-electric submarines possess a significant vulnerability that compromises their stealth capabilities, according to a prominent Russian military commentator.

Andrey Kots, a defense observer for the Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti, noted that the requirement for the vessels to periodically surface in order to recharge their batteries acts as their primary Achilles heel.
According to Kots, the original design plans for the Project 677 submarines called for them to be equipped with air-independent propulsion systems. This advanced technology would have allowed the vessels to remain submerged for significantly longer continuous periods.
Because they lack this system, the submarines are forced to surface to snorkel depth. At this depth, a mast is raised above the water to draw in atmospheric oxygen, allowing the vessel's diesel engines to operate and recharge the onboard electric batteries. This necessary process substantially increases the acoustic and visual signature of the submarine, raising the risk of detection by enemy forces.
Capabilities of the Lada class
The Project 677 Lada class represents the fourth generation of diesel-electric attack submarines developed for the Russian Navy. The class was designed by the Rubin Design Bureau to succeed the older Kilo-class submarines. The vessels are primarily intended for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, the defense of naval bases, and intelligence gathering missions.
These submarines are armed with six 533-millimeter torpedo tubes. This configuration allows the Lada class to deploy a wide variety of munitions, including standard naval torpedoes, sea mines, and Kalibr cruise missiles.
The Kalibr is a versatile family of Russian cruise missiles that can be deployed from surface ships, submarines, or aircraft. The weapon system is capable of striking both naval vessels and land-based targets at long ranges, and has been a staple of modern Russian naval operations.
Air-independent propulsion, the technology originally intended for the class, is a modern marine propulsion system that permits a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to the surface. It provides a massive tactical advantage by enabling diesel-electric submarines to remain underwater for weeks at a time while operating almost silently, rivaling the stealth characteristics of larger nuclear-powered submarines.
Construction of the Maloyaroslavets
The Russian Navy continues to expand its fleet of Project 677 submarines.
In August, it was announced that a formal keel-laying ceremony took place in the city of St. Petersburg for a new submarine of the class named the Maloyaroslavets. The ceremony marked the official commencement of construction for the vessel, which will become the fifth submarine in the Project 677 family.
St. Petersburg, situated on the Baltic Sea in northwestern Russia, is a historic and critical hub for Russian naval construction. The city is home to the Admiralty Shipyards, one of the oldest and largest shipyards in the country, which is responsible for building the Lada-class submarines.
