Russian Aerospace Forces officer shot in Engels manhunt

Russian law enforcement officers in Engels have launched a search for an unidentified gunman who opened fire on an officer of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The shooting took place on the morning of September 3 in the village of Probuzhdenie, situated in the Saratov Oblast region of southwestern Russia, according to the Russian news channel Mash.

An unknown assailant wearing a helmet pulled up to the serviceman's residence on a motorcycle, fired several shots towards the officer, and immediately fled the scene.

The officer sustained severe injuries after bullets struck his torso and face. His driver was also wounded during the ambush but managed to escape and hide before returning to call for an ambulance.

Medical transfer to Moscow

Medical staff are currently preparing the wounded military officer for immediate transport to Moscow aboard a specialized medical flight.

Probuzhdenie is a rural settlement located in the Engels District of Saratov Oblast, positioned just outside the city of Engels along the eastern bank of the Volga River.

The city of Engels is widely recognized as the location of the Engels Air Force Base, a major military facility that serves as one of the primary operational hubs for the strategic bomber aviation fleet of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Saratov Oblast is a federal subject of Russia situated in the Volga Federal District, lying approximately 700 kilometres southeast of Moscow. The regional capital, Saratov, sits directly across the river from Engels and is connected by a major road bridge.

Military force background

The Russian Aerospace Forces, commonly abbreviated as the VKS, represent the aerial warfare branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The service branch was officially established in August 2015 following the merger of the Russian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces.

Reports regarding the incident were first published by Mash, a widely followed news outlet operating on the Telegram messaging platform that frequently covers criminal investigations and security developments across Russia.

Law enforcement authorities in the region have initiated a widespread search for the fleeing motorcyclist as the investigation into the morning shooting continues.
