Russia and India plan unified docking for space stations

Russia and India plan to unify the docking systems of their future national orbital stations to expand space cooperation and improve crew safety, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov has announced.

Speaking ahead of the Innoprom.India trade exhibition, Manturov said the two nations intend to standardise station interfaces, communication equipment, and docking mechanisms.

Interfax reported that the measure is intended to increase operational reliability, safeguard astronaut crews, and create broader options for joint missions in orbit. Manturov noted that the prospective Russian and Indian stations are planned to share the same orbital inclination.

Standardised docking systems allow spacecraft from different nations to connect directly in space, enabling emergency rescues, shared resupply flights, and crew transfers. Matching orbital inclinations mean the space stations will travel along similar flight paths relative to Earth's equator, making orbital rendezvous significantly easier and requiring less fuel during orbital manoeuvres.

Shared Orbital Inclinations

The shared orbital trajectory aligns with earlier analysis from Russian space scientists. Sergey Yazev, a leading researcher at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and professor at Irkutsk State University, previously stated that the planned inclination for the Russian Orbital Station matches the planned trajectories of both Indian and American orbital laboratories.

Yazev said that having matching inclinations with planned American and Indian space stations will help enhance safety for the Russian facility through potential international cooperation with both countries.

Russia is developing the Russian Orbital Station, known as ROS, as its primary long-term orbital research hub following the eventual retirement of the International Space Station. The facility is designed to serve as a modular platform for scientific experiments and international space operations.

India's Orbital Station Plans

India has also been accelerating its independent human spaceflight infrastructure. In August, Indian media outlet The Economic Times reported that India had approved the design project for the first module of its planned national orbital station, citing Vanniyaperumal Narayanan, the head of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The Indian Space Research Organisation, the country's national space agency, has expanded its crewed spaceflight ambitions alongside robotic lunar and planetary exploration missions. Standardising equipment with Russia builds on decades of technical cooperation between the two nations in satellite launches and astronaut training.

The upcoming Innoprom.India exhibition is expected to serve as a venue for further bilateral industrial and technological discussions between officials and aerospace representatives from Moscow and New Delhi.
