A study published in the scientific journal Environmental Research in 2025 found that microbiological contamination increases significantly when plastic bottles are refilled repeatedly without being washed beforehand.

While refilling a clean disposable bottle with safe drinking water on occasion carries minimal immediate risk, using the same container over multiple days creates ideal conditions for bacteria to multiply.

Microorganisms enter the bottle through routine physical contact with human hands, lips, and surrounding surfaces. Once inside, persistent moisture and liquid residues allow bacterial colonies to establish themselves out of sight.

Bacterial buildup in plastic surfaces

Small scratches, microscopic cracks, and surface irregularities in the plastic provide ideal anchor points where microorganisms can attach and form resilient biofilms. These micro-crevices make thorough decontamination difficult without proper scrubbing.

The bottle mouth and cap assembly require the most attention during cleaning because they endure constant physical contact from hands and mouth throughout the day. Moisture trapped in cap threads further accelerates microbial survival.

The type of beverage stored inside the container also dictates the speed of bacterial contamination. Sugary liquids such as fruit juices and carbonated soft drinks provide nutrients for bacteria, causing rapid multiplication when left at warm temperatures for extended hours.

Effective cleaning reduces microbial contamination

Researchers in the Environmental Research study evaluated various cleaning methods and confirmed that proper washing significantly reduces the overall microbial load inside used containers.

The test results showed that thorough manual washing or cleaning in a dishwasher under controlled conditions successfully eliminated most accumulated microorganisms from bottle surfaces.

Single-use plastic bottles are commonly manufactured from polyethylene terephthalate, a lightweight material that easily develops micro-abrasions during routine handling. Millions of consumers regularly reuse these bottles to minimize plastic waste and lower personal expenses.

Health and sanitation guidelines recommend washing all reusable drink containers daily using warm water, mild soap, and a specialized bottle brush to sanitize hard-to-reach grooves and threads.
