The portable devices are smaller and cheaper than traditional roof arrays, but were previously banned in the United Kingdom due to strict electrical safety standards.
Despite being in the primary target demographic as a ground-floor flat resident, consumer writer Helen Crane has confirmed she will not be buying the technology.
Crane lives in an 1880 property where another resident occupies the floor above her, preventing traditional roof installation. Although she monitors energy usage, harvests rainwater for her garden, buys secondhand goods, and recycles supermarket plastic film, she insists the new systems carry too many practical drawbacks.

Retailer Availability and Supply Concerns
Major high street and online retailers including B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl previously expressed interest in stocking plug-in solar panels once law changes took effect. However, none of the chains have confirmed immediate availability on store shelves today.
Industry experts note that any compliant panels must meet stringent technical regulations. Weighing approximately 25kg, the units are expected to be sold primarily online rather than carried in physical stores.
Retailers may also hesitate to build up significant stock during the final weeks of summer. Achieving ideal light exposure is straightforward on a rooftop but becomes difficult when mounting panels on walls, balconies, or shared fences. In Crane's case, the only south-facing area of her flat faces the street, creating security concerns about leaving a £500 piece of equipment in public view.

Property Restrictions and European Comparisons
Flat dwellers attempting to install plug-in solar panels face potential legal and diplomatic disputes with property owners. Freeholders and landlords may refuse permission, while neighbours could object to equipment attached to shared boundary fences.
Similar mini power units, known as Balconkraftwerk or balcony power plants, are already widely used across continental Europe, particularly in Germany and Spain.
European adoption has been aided by sunnier climates and different housing regulations, whereas British property structures present unique hurdles for shared buildings.

Insurers also warn that home insurance policies could be invalidated if policyholders fail to declare the installation of plug-in solar devices to their provider, while buyers are warned to purchase only from reputable retailers to avoid unapproved devices.

Crane highlighted that working away from home during peak daylight hours severely limits energy savings. Even when at home, relying on passing sunlight requires residents to manually coordinate heavy appliances like washing machines and dishwashers with weather changes.
