One truck driver was killed and traffic was blocked for hours on the Athens-Lamia national highway on Saturday after two trucks collided near Martino, leaving one vehicle in flames and the other overturned.
The crash happened at the 123rd kilometer mark of the Athens-bound lane, just past the Martino bridge, in the early hours of August 1. Police said the circumstances were still under investigation.
One truck crossed the median barrier, slammed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames, burning completely to the ground. The other truck overturned on the roadside.
Firefighters extracted the driver of the overturned truck from the wreckage. He was found unconscious and was later confirmed dead at the scene. His co-driver escaped with minor injuries.
The driver of the burning truck, identified as a Bulgarian national, managed to get out of the cab just seconds before the vehicle was entirely consumed by fire.
Traffic was halted in both directions for several hours following the collision. The right lane toward Thessaloniki reopened at 12:15 p.m., and police confirmed full traffic restoration at around 5:30 p.m.
