Old personal computers can see noticeable performance gains through a series of diagnostic and maintenance actions, according to technology publication How-To Geek. Writing for the portal, journalist Monica J. White noted that not everyone has the opportunity to buy a new computer to replace an old one, leading her to share a checklist outlining practical methods to speed up aging devices.
As her primary recommendation, White advised users to install a solid-state drive or buy a new SSD to replace an older storage unit. However, she noted that buyers should avoid purchasing the most expensive SSDs, explaining that premium drive capabilities would be useless on an aging PC.
Solid-state drives, commonly known as SSDs, rely on flash memory to store and retrieve data much faster than traditional mechanical hard disk drives. Upgrading to an SSD can significantly reduce operating system boot times and application loading delays, making it one of the most effective hardware upgrades for older systems.
Optimising software and startup settings
Turning to system software, White advised opening autostart settings and deleting useless applications that launch automatically whenever the computer is turned on. She explained that a complete list of these startup programs can be found inside the Windows Task Manager utility.

In addition, White highlighted the importance of disabling unnecessary background applications that consume processing capacity while running unnoticed. For computers that already have an SSD installed, she recommended clearing off old or junk files to keep the drive operating smoothly.
Task Manager is a built-in diagnostic tool in Microsoft Windows that allows users to monitor active applications, background processes, and system resource consumption. Programs configured to launch on startup remain active in system memory, which can drain memory and CPU resources needed for primary tasks.
Physical cleaning and system configuration
Alongside software adjustments, White recommended performing physical maintenance on the computer hardware. She advised users to clean the PC of accumulated dust and cobwebs, which can block cooling fans and restrict airflow inside the case.
The advice follows an earlier report by journalists at technology publication XDA, who stated that certain activated settings in Windows can actively slow down computer operation. As a specific example of settings that degrade system speed, the XDA journalists pointed to the power plan configurations of the device. Power plans in Windows manage how a system balances performance against energy consumption, with power-saver modes often throttling processor speed to conserve energy.
