Tickets to see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX are selling out within minutes worldwide, with London’s BFI IMAX clearing a fresh allocation in 30 minutes and crashing its website in the process.
BFI says roughly 40,000 people are now queued for upcoming sessions at that single venue. Demand globally runs to thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands, of people waiting for 70mm IMAX screenings, according to the report.
Social media comparisons between standard screens and 70mm IMAX have fuelled the frenzy. The IMAX chief executive has said the film will be a turning point for the format.
Nolan adapts Homer’s epic, with Matt Damon playing Odysseus alongside a cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and Zendaya. The production budget is reported to be close to $250 million.
