New 76-plate cars: Seat offers biggest September discounts

Car buyers could save thousands of pounds on new vehicles as the "76" number plate arrives on Tuesday, with Seat offering the largest average price cuts at 19.1 per cent.

Tuesday marks the start of September and the arrival of the '76' plate age identifier. For motorists, this is one of the best times to bag a new-car bargain. Here's our ultimate guide to doing just that

The start of September is one of the most critical sales months for the British motor industry, succeeding the "26" plates introduced for models registered after March 1.

With around 50 brands competing for sales, manufacturers are deploying significant promotional offers and finance contributions to capitalise on increased showroom footfall.

Research by independent pricing service Insider Car Deals, which uses mystery shoppers to negotiate with showrooms across the country, found that buyers who haggle can secure an extra £1,469 off on average compared with the best initial offer.

This "discount gap" extends to £3,137 for premium models, demonstrating that a salesperson's first quote is rarely their lowest price.

Pat Hoy, who has analysed car prices for two decades at the service, advised motorists not to delay their purchases. "Salespeople are keener to do deals, especially early on, when they're chasing targets and want to report a bumper September," he said.

"Later, if manufacturers are happy with the volumes they've achieved, that keenness can fade."

"Cupra weighs its discounts towards PCP deals, with more than £5,000 of deposit contribution available across the range, plus £1,533 from dealers," Hoy added. "Hyundai leans the other way: an average dealer discount of £3,298 compared with a finance contribution of £1,514."

The pricing service offers a Personal Deal Sheet for buyers, providing a target negotiation price with a money back guarantee, or a full broker service.

Electric vehicle incentives peak

Electric vehicles continue to attract the largest individual discounts, averaging 12 per cent or £6,815 per car, a slight increase from £6,548 last September.

This total combines showroom price cuts, manufacturer incentives and the Government Electric Car Grant, which offers a subsidy of up to £3,750 and has reduced the need for car makers to fund discounts entirely themselves.

However, Hoy cautioned that these savings could slow if the government relaxes electric vehicle sales targets ahead of 2030.

"Sensible heads are realising that organic demand for EVs just ain't there, and throwing more discount money at them won't really move the dial," Hoy said. "Also, with Andy Burnham signalling that a watering-down of the ZEV mandate may be imminent, manufacturers will have reduced exposure to fines and the prospect of further government support on the horizon."

Meanwhile, savings on hybrid vehicles are stronger than a year ago, averaging 11 per cent or £6,000, leaving buyers around £1,000 better off. Petrol and diesel cars are typically discounted by roughly 10 per cent, up slightly on the previous year.

Seat and Peugeot lead savings

Seat leads the manufacturer discounts with average savings of 19.1 per cent. The Spanish brand is providing deposit contributions of between £2,250 and £4,750 on finance deals, plus an additional £500 off cars in stock until September 14, for a total average saving of £5,909.

Peugeot offers the second largest average reduction at 16.1 per cent, allowing buyers to save nearly £5,200 on a new model through incentives and grants.

Skoda, Volkswagen, Cupra and Nissan are all offering average reductions of around 16 per cent.

Insider Car Deals says there is room for negotiation on pricing with Nissan sales staff in September. Its team of expert mystery shoppers can haggle over £3k off

Skoda buyers can save more than £6,100, including a £3,000 deposit contribution and a £1,000 incentive available until the end of August that could be extended into September. Negotiation can knock a further £2,500 off the asking price.

Volkswagen provides a £1,000 cash discount or an extra £1,000 towards deposit contributions ranging from £3,500 to £7,250 until September 14. Negotiating an average £2,329 off takes total savings beyond £7,000.

Seat's sporty sister brand Cupra offers finance contributions from £250 to £7,750, with mystery shoppers securing total average reductions of £6,776.

Nissan is providing £2,000 in finance contributions, but buyers who negotiate can secure a further £3,047 off the purchase price.

Vauxhall cuts between £500 and £900 off most models except the Frontera, alongside £2,185 in finance contributions. Its showrooms are currently driving a harder bargain, with negotiated discounts averaging £1,624 for a total 15.9 per cent reduction.

Toyota buyers receive £3,472 in finance contributions and zero per cent interest on many models, securing a 15.4 per cent overall discount with £1,627 in dealer negotiation.

Jeep offers a 14.9 per cent discount focused on £3,544 in finance incentives, with firm dealers yielding just £1,045 in negotiation.

Audi dealers provided the largest negotiated discounts, with mystery shoppers securing £4,199 off. Combined with £4,252 in finance contributions, the total average saving hits 14 per cent or nearly £8,500.

Finance rates impact prices

While large price cuts are attractive, Hoy warned that drivers must crunch the numbers.

"PCP APRs can have a big impact on the total amount you pay," he said. "The market average is 5.4 per cent, yet BMW and Skoda offer 2.9 per cent on selected models, while Vauxhall Astra buyers are being offered big discounts but APRs of 10.9 per cent."

Chinese manufacturers, which have already claimed 15 per cent of British new car sales in 2026, are offering smaller average discounts of just over 10 per cent.

"Chinese manufacturers are now consolidating their positions and seeing what organic demand exists without heavy discounting," Hoy said. "Front runners MG, BYD and Jaecoo are averaging just over 10 per cent total discount, with traditional mainstream brands (in our 76-plate research) offering up to 27 per cent."

Biggest discounts by category

"It doesn't matter which car segment buyers are looking at, double-digit discounts are routinely available across the board," Hoy said.

The petrol Peugeot 208 supermini offers the largest percentage saving of any small car at 26 per cent, reducing the average £25,517 list price by up to £6,034. This drops monthly payments to £199 over four years at 8.5 per cent interest.

For drivers looking for a frugal small car, the petrol 208 is a very good option. And it will surely be more enticing in September with discounts of up to 26%

Other top small car deals include the Volkswagen Polo petrol with 23.4 per cent off, saving £5,773 for a £184 monthly payment, and the Hyundai i20 petrol with 18.7 per cent off, saving £4,483 at £195 a month.

In the family car category, the petrol Vauxhall Astra can be reduced by 27.8 per cent, cutting £8,323 from its typical £30,578 price, though monthly payments remain at £285 over four years due to a 10.9 per cent interest rate.

Buyers can also save 17.2 per cent on the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid, cutting £5,457, and 16.7 per cent on the petrol Renault Captur, a reduction of £4,200.

For family SUVs, the petrol Skoda Karoq offers a 22.4 per cent saving, taking £7,442 off its £35,512 retail price to cost £258 a month.

The hybrid BMW X3 offers 17.2 per cent off, saving £10,172 for £405 a month, while the hybrid Cupra Terramar matches the Kodiaq's 18.7 per cent discount to save £7,892.

Among electric cars, the Peugeot e-208 offers a 27.1 per cent discount, saving buyers £7,065 off its £27,428 tag and costing £256 a month at 8.5 per cent interest.

Substantial discounting and low APR rates on EVs make some models very attractive propositions from September 1, including BMW's new iX3

Buyers looking for a larger electric vehicle can secure 23.6 per cent off a BMW iX3, worth £9,369 and £225 a month at 2.9 per cent interest, or 20.8 per cent off a Skoda Enyaq, saving £8,604 for £267 a month.
