NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered unusual wide, shallow holes in the bedrock of Mount Sharp on Mars, space agency officials announced on Thursday.
The newly identified cavities are scattered across the bedrock and differ significantly from features captured during the rover's 14 years of operation on the Martian surface, which typically recorded deeper and denser holes.
The discovery was made while the robotic vehicle was traversing the valleys of Mount Sharp, a central mountain within Gale Crater on the Red Planet. NASA officially disclosed the findings on Thursday, September 3.
Michelle Minitti, an investigator for the space agency, said that pits are not unusual on Mars because resistant nodules or pebbles can fall out of host rock and leave voids behind. However, Minitti noted that these specific depressions were far wider and shallower than previous features observed by the mission and were not accompanied by any obvious objects that had formerly occupied them.
Unusual Cavities in Martian Bedrock
The images showing the unusual landscape features were captured using the Mars Hand Lens Imager, a high-resolution camera known as MAHLI. The instrument is mounted on a turret at the end of Curiosity's seven-foot robotic arm, allowing scientists to examine rock textures up close.

To capture the detailed structures, the MAHLI camera utilized an on-board focusing process. This system creates a single composite image by merging multiple photographs of the same target taken from different focus positions. The primary goal of this technique is to gather multiple viewing angles into a single image, assembling as many geological characteristics as possible for scientists to evaluate on Earth.
A team of researchers is currently working to determine the origin of the shallow pits. Scientists are attempting to discover whether the cavities were formed by natural erosion over time or by a geological process that has not yet been identified on Mars.
Curiosity Rover Mission Background
Curiosity is the largest and most capable robotic rover ever sent to explore Mars. Launched by NASA in 2011, the mobile laboratory was designed to assess whether the planet ever possessed environmental conditions capable of supporting microbial life. Its primary mission involves analyzing local environmental conditions, inspecting rock formations, and searching for chemical evidence of past habitability.
The rover was built by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory leads the Curiosity mission on behalf of the NASA Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The specialized MAHLI camera instrument was built by Malin Space Science Systems, a space instrument manufacturing company based in San Diego.
Mount Sharp, officially known as Aeolis Mons, rises nearly three miles from the floor of Gale Crater. Curiosity has been climbing the mountain since 2014, studying layers of sedimentary rock that document changes in the Martian climate and surface environment over billions of years. The fourth planet from the Sun remains a primary target for scientific exploration as researchers seek to understand its geological history.
