French tech firm Momentum Technologies has unveiled Lifepod, a high-strength mobile shelter capsule designed to withstand disaster scenarios ranging from bullets to bombings.
The futuristic capsule is constructed from high-strength technical steels and engineered for mobility, offering transportable protection against extreme threats. Prices for the capsule alone range from £25,404 to £34,904.
"Unlike traditional protection infrastructure, which is often fixed and specialised in a single risk, the LIFEPODS capsules have been engineered to be mobile, transportable, industrialisable, rapidly deployable and adaptable to operational contexts," Momentum Technologies explained.
The company added that the capsules "can be containerised, helicopter-transportable, stackable, and integrated in urban areas, on industrial sites or in remote environments."
Three capsule configurations
Momentum Technologies has designed the Lifepod range in three distinct configurations: Capsule W01, Capsule B01, and Capsule Q01, each tailored to specific emergency situations.
Capsule W01 is a floating unit built to accommodate two to four people during severe weather disasters. It is intended for use during tsunamis, flash floods, coastal flooding, and breaches of dams or levees.
"Its 5083 marine-grade aluminum structure, buoyancy system, integrated ballast, and interior equipment provide temporary shelter for a family or small group of occupants," according to the company's website. Marine-grade 5083 aluminum is an alloy widely utilized in industrial and naval engineering for its corrosion resistance in saltwater environments.
The manufacturer noted that "the capsule is designed to float, withstand debris impacts, and keep its occupants safe until rescue arrives."
Designers reported that testing on the W01 has been "very encouraging," although an official release date for the floating model has not yet been announced.
Hostile environment and earthquake protection
The B01 configuration is built for one to two occupants seeking shelter from combat or severe security threats.
"The B01 was designed to provide a protected space against ballistic threats, shrapnel, armed attacks, and highly degraded environments," Momentum Technologies stated. The firm explained that the pod allows users to seek safety and lock the door system within seconds.
It is targeted at sensitive sites, critical infrastructure, security forces, industrial companies, and organisations needing a rapid, compact, pre-positionable defence solution. The B01 model is currently in its industrialisation phase, with final validations expected this month.
The Q01 configuration is engineered specifically to withstand earthquakes, structural collapse, and hazards stemming from building instability in high-risk zones.
"The Q01 is intended for areas highly exposed to earthquakes and sudden collapses," Momentum Technologies said. "Its objective is to provide a compact, accessible, and resilient refuge, increasing the chances of survival when immediate evacuation of a building is no longer possible."
Technical specifications and market launch
The three Lifepod models feature different dimensions, capacities, and pricing structures based on their intended operating environment:
- W01: Designed for tsunamis and flash floods, holds 2 to 4 occupants, priced from €35,000 to €40,000 (£29,870 to £34,140).
- B01: Designed for ballistic threats, shrapnel, and armed attacks, holds 1 to 2 occupants, priced at €29,000 (£24,750).
- Q01: Designed for earthquakes and structural collapses, holds 2 to 3 occupants, price to be confirmed.
The survival pods were officially presented at the VivaTech technology exhibition in Paris, France. VivaTech is an annual conference that brings together global technology developers, start-ups, and investors.
During the event, Cedric Choffat, founder of Momentum Technologies, outlined the strategic direction for the capsule lineup.
"The market is now confirming the strategic interest in our next-generation resilience solutions," Choffat said. "Our objective is to accelerate industrialisation, certifications, the structuring of production and the commercial deployment of our capsules - turning this international visibility into concrete operational deployments."
Wider emergency planning context
The unveiling of the Lifepod capsules comes amid broader discussions regarding personal safety and disaster preparation kit guidance.
Official guidance published on government websites for household emergency plans suggests storing items such as bottled water, wet wipes, and non-perishable food supplies.
However, scientific researchers have indicated that standard public emergency lists omit several critical items required during major crises or lockdowns. Scientists suggest that gas-powered generators provide crucial backup power, while specialized face masks are necessary to filter harmful smoke during catastrophic events.
