Russian actor Mikhail Efremov has chosen stage acting over film appearances to avoid returning to his established rowdy screen image, film critic Roman Grigoryev said.
Speaking to the National News Service, Grigoryev stated that non-creative motives played a significant role in the decision by Efremov to turn down cinema offers in favor of serving in the theater.
Grigoryev explained that all of Efremov's film roles are tied to a swaggering persona. The critic noted that the actor evidently does not wish to revisit that screen identity, prompting him to choose smaller chamber venues and roles that do not remind audiences of his hooligan past.
Grigoryev added that Efremov likely selected Workshop 12 because of a long-standing friendship with director Nikita Mikhalkov. According to the critic, the venue offers an environment where the actor feels protected. Grigoryev noted that regardless of how anyone feels about Mikhalkov, credit should be given to the director for extending a helping hand to Efremov.
