Microsoft has advised computer users to install an urgent security update for the Windows operating system within three days of its release, according to tech news publication Windows Latest.
The recommendation follows a major Windows security release introduced by Microsoft during the second week of August. The software patch addresses 421 system vulnerabilities and code errors discovered across Windows 11 25H2/24H2, Windows 11 23H2, and Windows 10 operating systems.
Mayank Parmar, an editor at Windows Latest, noted that the deadline for installing security patches is three days from the moment they are released. He explained that this three day guideline was provided directly by Microsoft.
Parmar added that although users retain the option to update their operating system at a later date, Windows developers recommend installing security patches as quickly as possible to protect systems from potential security risks.
Checking system build numbers
A significant number of Windows users have automatic updates enabled on their devices, allowing patches to install without manual intervention. For those looking to verify their current system status, Parmar outlined how to check the active software version.
To inspect the software version, users need to open system settings, navigate to the About section, and locate the build number. Parmar stated that a build number of 26200.9168 or 26100.9168 confirms that the computer has the most current version of the operating system installed.
Windows 10 upgrades and system support
The patch deployment comes alongside broader changes to how Microsoft handles its legacy software platforms. Microsoft previously began restricting certain features within Microsoft 365 and OneDrive in an effort to compel Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11. However, the technology company has pledged to continue supporting operating system users until at least October 2028.
