Mercedes is launching a completely rebuilt GLA compact SUV that, for the first time, will be offered in electric form, with the top-spec variant capable of covering 408 miles on a single charge.
The third-generation GLA is built on Mercedes' new compact MMA platform, bringing an entirely new interior, updated infotainment and the brand's latest exterior design. The electric version is due on sale within months. A hybrid model follows in early 2027.
The original GLA was Mercedes' first move into the compact luxury SUV segment and became a consistent bestseller. The second generation had been in showrooms since 2019. According to Autotrader, the diesel GLA was the UK's fastest-selling car in 2025, averaging just 23 days from delivery to sale. Despite that track record, no diesel will be offered in the new model.
A bolder exterior
The new GLA is longer, wider and lower than the model it replaces. Mercedes has given it a more muscular look, with a wider rear track and broad shoulders. The front end is dominated by a large blanked-off grille, the kind previously reserved for Mercedes' bigger, more expensive models, now fitted with animated micro-LED lighting and illuminated three-pointed stars.
A minimalist cabin
Inside, the GLA takes a stripped-back approach centred on a floating MBUX Superscreen that runs the full width of the dashboard, measuring almost 40 inches across. An AI voice assistant is built in to help drivers operate the large display without distraction.
The cabin also features circular sporty air vents, concave door panels with floating-style inserts, a floating centre console and a Burmester 3D surround-sound system.
The panoramic glass roof is divided into seven individually controlled segments, letting each occupant choose how much light enters their section of the car.
Boot capacity stands at 410 litres, 70 litres more than the outgoing model. With the 40/20/20 split rear seats folded flat, that figure rises to 1,400 litres. The electric version also gains a 107-litre frunk.
Three electric variants at launch
Mercedes will offer three fully electric versions of the GLA. The GLA 200 carries a 58kWh battery. The GLA 250+ uses a larger 85kWh pack. The GLA 350 4MATIC shares the 58kWh battery of the base model but is the most powerful of the three, producing 349bhp and reaching 62mph in 5.4 seconds.
The longest range belongs to the GLA 250+, rated at 408 miles per charge, enough to cover the distance from Birmingham to Glasgow. That figure exceeds the range of both the new all-electric CLA and the larger GLB SUV.
The GLA supports charging at up to 320kW. At that rate, Mercedes says 168 miles of range can be added in just ten minutes. A fourth electric variant, fitted with a 71kWh battery, will join the lineup in early 2027.
Hybrid arrives in 2027
At the start of 2027, Mercedes will launch a hybrid GLA built around a new electrified 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 22kW electric motor. Combined output is 187bhp, and fuel economy of around 50mpg is expected. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions will be offered.
Trim levels and pricing
For the first time, the GLA will be available in four trim levels, including AMG Line and AMG Plus options for buyers who want a sportier feel, plus a Night Package.
Mercedes has not confirmed pricing. The car is expected to cost around £45,000, in line with the new CLA.
