The Mediterranean Sea is warming at roughly double the global average rate as human-driven climate change fuels severe marine heatwaves across European waters, according to a new analysis published by World Weather Attribution.
High summer temperatures in 2026 are affecting not only land surfaces but also European seas. Scientists alert that rising water temperatures threaten marine ecosystems and can intensify extreme weather events on land.
The study examined four European coastal zones, stretching from the Mediterranean to northern Europe. Researchers concluded that the thermal increase in European seas is outstripping global average warming.
World Weather Attribution is an international academic collaboration that analyzes how climate change influences extreme weather events. Marine heatwaves occur when ocean temperatures remain abnormally high compared to historical baselines for a specific time of year.
Warming trends across European seas
To determine the origin of rising sea temperatures, researchers contrasted registered measurements with multiple climate models. Their findings indicate that most of the observed warming is linked to climate change driven by burning fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas.
Data from the summer of 2026 reveals that nearly 90 percent of the Bay of Biscay and 80 percent of the western Mediterranean suffered severe marine heatwaves.
Without current human-driven warming of approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius, scientists estimate affected areas would have been limited to about 40 percent. In the eastern Mediterranean, severe heatwave coverage reached 70 percent, compared to an estimated 9 percent without human influence.
In European Celtic coastal waters, marine heatwaves affected 80 percent of the area during summer 2026, compared to an estimated 30 percent baseline without human-induced warming.
The Bay of Biscay lies along the western coast of France and northern Spain, while Celtic coastal waters stretch off Ireland and Great Britain. The Mediterranean Sea forms a semi-enclosed ocean basin bounded by southern Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia.
Scientific findings on rising sea temperatures
Claire Bergin, a researcher at the ICARUS Climate Research Centre at Maynooth University, explained that human-caused climate change has added approximately 2 degrees Celsius to Mediterranean sea temperatures.

Bergin added that human activity has also increased water temperatures in western European seas by more than 1.3 to 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Researchers noted that while warmer waters may seem appealing to beachgoers seeking comfortable swimming conditions, elevated ocean temperatures carry far more significant consequences for marine environments and coastal industries.
Maynooth University is a public research institution in Ireland, where the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Units (ICARUS) conducts research on atmospheric processes and climate variability.
Impacts on marine life and fishing industries
Marine heatwaves can trigger mass mortality events among species essential for ecosystem stability, including corals, sponges, and macroalgae. The loss or reduction of these populations can alter coastal ecosystems through cascading ecological impacts.
Rising water temperatures also alter food availability for numerous marine species. Furthermore, higher temperatures make it easier for invasive species to establish themselves in areas where cold conditions previously prevented survival.
Economic activities such as commercial fishing and aquaculture face growing disruption. Scientists warned that projected warming over coming decades could exceed the adaptation limits of many species, compromising major fisheries including cod, pollock, mackerel, scallops, and lobster.
Effects in Spain and atmospheric risks
In Spain, the consequences of warming sea waters are already becoming visible. Ángel Borja, a researcher at the AZTI technology centre, highlighted that the Iberian Peninsula is among the areas especially exposed to these marine changes.
In the Basque Country, Borja explained that seawater reached 25 degrees Celsius at the end of June 2026 and remained around 24 degrees Celsius throughout the summer. He noted that such elevated readings were previously recorded only sporadically, primarily during August.
Warmer sea waters also impact the atmosphere above them. By increasing the capacity of the sea to supply moisture to the air, higher ocean temperatures can favor the formation of more intense storms and contribute to extreme rainfall events on land.
