Marvel's Wolverine Gets Mature 17+ Rating From ESRB

The ESRB rated Marvel's Wolverine Mature 17+ over intense violence, dismemberment and drug references ahead of its September 15 launch.

Marvel's Wolverine Gets Mature 17+ Rating From ESRB

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has given Marvel's Wolverine a Mature 17+ rating, confirming that Insomniac Games' upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive will carry a far darker and more explicit tone than the studio's Marvel's Spider-Man series.

According to the ESRB, the game will include intense violence, blood and dismemberment, along with drug references, partial nudity and strong language, making it the most graphic title Insomniac Games has developed to date.

Combat and rage mode

The ESRB's content description details how players will control Logan as he uses his claws to cut, stab and tear apart soldiers and robots in violent combat. The game will also feature a rage mode that allows for faster combos and slow-motion finishing moves, including executions in which Logan drives his claws through enemies' heads.

In-game purchases

The ESRB listing also references in-game purchases, though this does not necessarily mean Marvel's Wolverine will include microtransactions. As with Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the reference is tied to the option to later upgrade to the Digital Deluxe Edition, which adds extra content and exclusive outfits for Logan.

The ESRB also notes the game will feature abundant blood effects, screams of pain and scenes of dismemberment or decapitation. It points to partial nudity, including scenes that briefly show a character's buttocks, as well as references to drug use and production in the dialogue.

Marvel's Wolverine will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
