A person standing on Mars could experience spring underfoot and winter overhead at the exact same time as daytime ground temperatures near the equator reach 24 degrees Celsius while air at human height remains below zero, according to data from NASA published by space news outlet Space Daily.

Scientists compared the phenomenon to placing one thermometer on the sun-warmed Martian soil and another just two meters higher at head level. The extreme temperature difference across that short distance is caused by Mars having an exceptionally thin layer of air that is virtually incapable of conducting or transferring heat between the surface and the atmosphere.

The United States space agency NASA describes the condition in its guide to Mars facts as spring underfoot and winter overhead. On Earth, dense air efficiently redistributes thermal energy so that ground and atmospheric temperatures function as a single connected system, whereas on Mars they exist as two largely separate thermal layers.

The primary reason for the extreme divide is the sheer scarcity of air capable of moving heat around the planet. Atmospheric pressure near the Martian surface is less than one percent of Earth's pressure at sea level, and although the atmosphere consists mostly of carbon dioxide, the overall volume of gas above the surface is far too low for effective heat exchange to occur.

Impact on Martian exploration hardware

This atmospheric thinness has repeatedly created severe engineering challenges for robotic missions operating on the Martian surface. NASA's Ingenuity helicopter was forced to spin its rotor blades at extraordinary speeds to achieve flight in an atmosphere with only about one percent of Earth's density, while the MOXIE oxygen generator on Mars required a specialized mechanical pump to collect enough carbon dioxide gas to produce breathable oxygen.

Measurements gathered by NASA's Perseverance rover in Jezero Crater have confirmed these atmospheric calculations. The rover's onboard Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer instrument, known as MEDA, tracks temperatures at various heights above the crater floor, recording surface temperatures rising from minus 83 degrees Celsius before dawn to plus 5 degrees Celsius at noon while surrounding air temperatures range between minus 83 degrees and minus 23 degrees Celsius.

An analysis of MEDA data published in 2023 revealed that the vast majority of this dramatic thermal transition is concentrated within the first 1.45 meters above the surface. During the middle of the day, the vertical temperature gradient can reach approximately 26 degrees Celsius for every single meter of height.

Curiosity measurements in Gale Crater

A similar pattern was previously recorded by NASA's Curiosity rover while exploring Gale Crater elsewhere on Mars. Curiosity found that ground temperatures fluctuated from plus 3 degrees Celsius down to minus 91 degrees Celsius, whereas air temperatures ranged between minus 2 degrees and minus 75 degrees Celsius, with the ground warming up and cooling down much faster than the air in both directions.

Despite the warm daytime ground, experts emphasized that a warm surface does not offer comfortable or survivable conditions for humans. Atmospheric pressure on Mars is far too low for life without a pressurized suit, oxygen is virtually absent from the air, and the surface faces constant bombardment from ultraviolet and ionizing space radiation.

Even powerful Martian winds transfer significantly less heat energy and mechanical force than Earth winds of equal speed because the atmospheric density is so low. Surface heat also vanishes almost instantly after sunset, as the soil radiates its stored energy into cold space without an atmosphere capable of retaining the warmth.

Broader discoveries in planetary science

The atmospheric findings come alongside other recent breakthroughs across planetary science. Ukrainian news agency UNIAN previously reported a rapid surge in the known moon count of Saturn, where advanced astronomical observations expanded the planet's tally of confirmed natural satellites from 83 to 285 by 2026, giving Saturn nearly three times as many moons as Jupiter.
