Academic and historian Maria Repoussi has resigned from SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance following disagreements with the political plan of the party's new leadership. Repoussi announced her resignation from the party, its Political Secretariat, and its Central Committee in a letter delivered to party headquarters at Koumoundourou on August 5, 2026.
In her letter, published by efsyn.gr, Repoussi said she had repeatedly expressed her disagreement with the new leadership's direction. She explained that she had remained in SYRIZA until now because of her political, managerial, and scientific duties at the Nikos Poulantzas Institute.

Nikos Poulantzas Institute Replacement
Repoussi said SYRIZA leadership decided to replace her as director and scientific lead of the Nikos Poulantzas Institute without holding a prior meeting of the Political Secretariat. She expressed concern that the Institute could be converted into a party arm.
According to Repoussi, the Institute had achieved a brilliant course since its relaunch in April 2025 thanks to its Scientific and Administrative Council, research staff, and administrative team. She said the organization aimed to serve as an inclusive ideological, political, and programmatic meeting point for the pluralistic left, expanding its influence among citizens over the past year.

Future Role at the Institute
Repoussi expressed hope that her removal would not interrupt the Institute's progress. She stated that out of a sense of responsibility, she intends to remain at the Institute temporarily to complete the decisions of its latest Board of Directors, which she had undertaken from the Executive Secretariat and the Board.
Repoussi added that she has no reason to remain inside SYRIZA or its governing bodies.
