Loulé has officially entered the race to become the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2028, aiming to turn culture into a core driver of regional development.
The municipality announced its application for the national title to strengthen the annual attractiveness of the Algarve throughout the entire calendar year.
Cultural Ambassadors and Regional Goals
Three prominent cultural figures with links to the municipality are serving as ambassadors for the bid. Writer Lídia Jorge, author of O Dia dos Prodígios, was born in Boliqueime. Musician Dino D'Santiago and director and playwright Ricardo Neves-Neves were both born in Quarteira.
Loulé Mayor Telmo Pinto, of the Socialist Party, told Agência Lusa that officials want people to look at the region differently and realize that the south offers culture all year round. He added that the candidature serves as an invitation to visit the Algarve and experience regional culture from January to December 2028.
National Competition and Award Details
Loulé joins several other Portuguese cities that have already announced their intention to compete for the 2028 title. Official applications managed by the Ministry of Culture through GEPAC remain open. Other known candidate cities include Amarante, Barreiro, Guarda, Leiria, Óbidos, and Setúbal.
The winning city will be announced on December 9 and will receive a state financial allocation of one million euros. Meanwhile, Braga will continue projects established during its tenure as a Portuguese Capital of Culture.
Cities including Leiria, Setúbal, and Barreiro remain active contenders in the national competition. Leiria continues its own individual bid for the title.
