Actress Lisa Kudrow has revealed the one fan request from her time on Friends she consistently refuses to fulfill, confirming she will not sing her character's famous song Smelly Cat for public admirers.
The 63-year-old performer, who played Phoebe Buffay across all ten seasons of the American sitcom, explained during an appearance on the radio program Fresh Air that she does not mind when viewers quote iconic lines back to her or call her by her character's name. However, she stated that her reaction changes completely when fans ask for a live musical performance, saying she simply does not want to do it.
Phoebe Buffay, a quirky masseuse and aspiring musician known for playing acoustic guitar at the fictional Central Perk coffee house, introduced Smelly Cat during the second season of Friends in 1995. The comedic track about an unloved feline quickly became one of the most recognized running gags in television history, spawning storyline arcs and guest performances throughout the show's decade-long run on NBC.

Despite her refusal to sing on demand, Kudrow emphasized that she thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of working on Friends, which originally aired from 1994 to 2004. Kudrow admitted she did not realize at the time that Rachel was intended to be the central romantic partner for Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer. She asked her agents to propose the character interpretation to show creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, hoping to bring her own comedic style to the role.
Her agents later returned with a polite rejection, informing Kudrow that the producers were struggling to cast the role of Phoebe and refused to change their plans. Kudrow acknowledged that the decision was a gentle way of letting her know she was not the type of actress producers envisioned as Ross Geller's primary love interest. The role of Rachel Green was ultimately awarded to Jennifer Aniston, whose decade-long on-screen romance with Schwimmer became a focal point of the series.
