Laptop buyers should focus on memory, processor speed, display quality and battery life, consumer technology publication Compare Empire has advised in a new guide.
The specialists noted that consumers must first identify the exact tasks they need a machine to perform, warning that standard office work and basic web browsing do not require an expensive gaming system.

Compare Empire identified random access memory as one of the most critical specifications when choosing a portable computer. The publication recommended 16 gigabytes of RAM as a suitable baseline for the vast majority of consumers, while suggesting that users who handle demanding video editing projects should choose 32 gigabytes. Simpler computing tasks can run smoothly on lower capacities.
Random access memory serves as a computer's short-term workspace, holding active data so the system can switch between open applications without delays. Machines with insufficient memory often experience performance bottlenecks, forcing the operating system to offload active programs onto slower storage drives.
Memory and storage capacity
For file storage, the authors advised shoppers to select a laptop equipped with a solid-state drive of at least 512 gigabytes. Devices fitted with 256 gigabytes remain sufficient for undemanding work, but the publication cautioned that storage space can evaporate quickly when saving high-resolution photo collections and installing larger software suites.
Solid-state drives, widely known as SSDs, rely on flash memory chips rather than the moving magnetic platters found in older mechanical hard drives. The technology significantly accelerates file access, software loading times and operating system boot speeds, making it standard equipment across modern laptops.
The review also highlighted the central processor and graphics card as vital components of any device. Compare Empire noted that people intending to play video games or assemble high-resolution video clips must prioritize more capable processor models and dedicated graphics hardware to handle the heavy computational load.
Central processing units manage standard software instructions and operating system commands, while dedicated graphics processing units contain specialized silicon designed to render three-dimensional geometry and process parallel video calculations.
Display dimensions and battery endurance
Display size and battery endurance represent another essential trade-off, according to the publication. A larger display makes multitasking across multiple open windows far more comfortable, but it increases the overall dimensions and weight of the chassis, reducing portability.
When evaluating battery life, Compare Empire suggested relying on independent laboratory tests rather than manufacturer estimates. The authors explained that actual battery performance fluctuates considerably based on screen brightness levels and software workloads during daily use.
Screen cleaning and device care
The hardware recommendations follow advice published by technology outlet HIGGT, which warned that incorrect cleaning techniques can cause permanent physical harm to laptop keyboards and screens.
HIGGT advised computer owners never to clean laptop screens with window cleaning sprays, bleaching agents, acetone or abrasive household chemicals. Such harsh chemical solutions can strip away delicate anti-reflective coatings and seep into the display assembly, causing lasting visual defects.
