Brandon Flowers, frontman of the American rock band The Killers, said in a BBC interview that he was initially opposed to Oasis reuniting and returning to the stage.
Flowers said the British band had a major influence on him as a teenager, and that the sudden wave of public adoration for Oasis irritated him, pushing him to keep his distance from the reunion.
He said he knew it sounded strange, but he had been against the Oasis reunion, not because he was not happy they had gotten back together, but because suddenly everyone had become an Oasis fan, even in America.
A Son's Fandom Changed His Mind
Despite his initial reaction, Flowers said he soon changed his mind after one of his children became a fan of the band.
He said he now has a 15 year old son who has fallen in love with Oasis. His son has learned the band's songs on guitar, while Flowers has been reworking them on piano, revisiting songs he loved when he was 19.
Oasis were formed in Manchester and built around the songwriting of Noel Gallagher and the vocals of his brother Liam. The band became one of the defining acts of the Britpop era in the 1990s before splitting in 2009 following years of feuding between the brothers.
Losing the Thrill of Live Shows
Flowers also shared his thoughts on the Gallagher brothers' reunion after first admitting that he no longer enjoys going to concerts himself.
Before achieving global success with The Killers, the American singer said he loved being part of the crowd at gigs, but that the experience has since turned into routine.
He said it had lost its magic for him because going to a show now means going to work. He said he used to be overwhelmed, unable to believe how lucky he was to be there, seeing Morrissey for the first time or The Cure for the first time, and that it had felt like paradise, a feeling that is now gone.
Still, Flowers said he believes the band that inspired him to buy his first guitar could work its magic on him again. He said he thinks he would probably feel that same thrill again if he went to see Oasis.
The Killers, known for hits including "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me," formed in Las Vegas in 2001 and have released multiple albums since. Flowers has fronted the band throughout its career.
