California-based Heart Aerospace has completed the first test flight of its battery-powered X1 demonstrator, the largest electric plane ever flown.

Los Angeles aircraft manufacturer Heart Aerospace has successfully flown the world's largest electric airplane, completing an experimental test flight over New York State.

The company's full-scale demonstrator aircraft, designated the X1, relies entirely on battery power for propulsion. Measuring 23 meters long with a wingspan of 32 meters, the experimental craft is the largest all-electric airplane ever to take to the skies.

The maiden flight took place on August 12 over Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. The airport, located near the Canadian border on a former military airfield, provided the controlled airspace required for the experimental trial.

During the test, the aircraft reached an altitude of 335 meters above the airport and remained airborne for 27 minutes. A test pilot operated the aircraft throughout the flight, relying on an all-electric propulsion system that generated more than one megawatt of power.

The trial was conducted under a special airworthiness certificate granted by the Federal Aviation Administration, the regulatory body overseeing civil aviation safety in the United States. Following the flight, Heart Aerospace founder and chief executive officer Anders Forslund declared that the mission proved electric flight is feasible on the scale of a commercial passenger airliner.

Design and regional flight capabilities

The X1 serves as a full-scale testbed for the ES-30, a planned 30-passenger regional airliner designed to lower emissions on short routes. Heart Aerospace intends the commercial craft to operate using four electric motors powered by onboard batteries, fuel-burning turbogenerators, or a combination of both energy sources.

When flying solely on battery power, the ES-30 will have an operational range of 200 kilometers. Switching to the thermal-electric hybrid mode extends the aircraft's total range to 800 kilometers, while maintaining a cruising speed of approximately 300 kilometers per hour.

The design concept mirrors other international efforts to decarbonize regional transport, such as the ERA project under development by French aircraft builder Aura Aero in Toulouse. Like Heart Aerospace, Aura Aero is working on hybrid-electric regional transports aimed at bridging the gap between current jet fuel dependencies and future zero-emission aviation goals.

Airline demand and commercial launch schedule

Heart Aerospace estimates that the ES-30 will cut operating costs by more than 40 percent compared to existing regional commercial aircraft. The expected cost savings, combined with significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, have generated substantial commercial interest from major airline groups.

Carriers including United Airlines, Air Canada, and regional operator JSX have already signed letters of intent to purchase the airliner. Total commitments under these agreements have reached $9.4 billion in value.

Engineers are currently developing the first pre-series production version of the ES-30. Heart Aerospace plans to begin initial flight tests for the commercial model in 2028, with the goal of bringing the 30-seat airliner into regular passenger service by 2031.
