Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis paid tribute to Greek philosopher Stelios Ramfos following his death, recalling what he called Ramfos's unusual appearance at the New Democracy party congress in 2017.
In a post, Hatzidakis said Greece's leading thinker, Stelios Ramfos, had died, describing him as a distinctive, modern philosopher whose intellectual pursuits included linking contemporary creativity with Greek Orthodox tradition. He noted Ramfos had long taught in Paris and had wide knowledge, clear thinking, sharp language when needed, an interventionist spirit and a focus on Greece.
Student memories and 2017 congress
Hatzidakis said he had been impressed the first time he heard Ramfos speak, as a student in the 1980s. He recalled inviting Ramfos to an unusual appearance at the New Democracy congress in 2017, saying Ramfos could impressively combine his intellectual depth with contemporary political and social debates.
Hatzidakis said Ramfos's intellectual legacy would always remain alive, and he offered his sincere condolences to Ramfos's relatives.
