Google has integrated an image generator called Nano Banana into Google Earth, giving users the ability to produce AI visualisations based on real geographic locations, including reconstructions of how historical sites may once have appeared.
The company describes education as one of the main use cases. As an example, users can ask the AI to show what Pompeii looked like before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Google emphasises that such reconstructions are artistic interpretations rather than historically confirmed representations.
Nano Banana can also be used to preview planned construction. The tool helps produce concept visuals of proposed residential or commercial buildings on empty plots, allowing developers to show what a site could look like before work begins. The AI can additionally generate infographics containing brief facts about landmarks.
The feature is already available to Google Earth users. Google has not said whether all locations in the service are supported or only a selection of popular sites. The company also cautions that generative AI outputs may contain inaccuracies.
