One month after extraordinary wildfires devastated France this summer, technological innovations including scanning drones and building robots are accelerating reconstruction and insurance payouts for disaster victims.

Journalist Anicet Mbida presented the new technologies during a broadcast of the morning show Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1, explaining how digital tools address major bottlenecks in recovering from severe fire damage.

After flames pass through communities, repairing damage traditionally requires months or even years of waiting. The disaster relief process begins with property assessments, but insurance claims frequently stall because human adjusters face overwhelming workloads and cannot visit every site immediately.

Drone scanning for insurance claims

Mbida said drone technology is now being deployed to overcome inspection backlogs. Unmanned aerial vehicles map damaged structures and scan buildings with laser technology to reveal even the smallest structural details affected by fire.

The detailed digital scan data is sent directly to insurance companies. Insurers then complete property appraisals remotely, eliminating the need to dispatch an adjuster to the physical location and significantly speeding up financial compensation for property owners.

Laser scanning, also known as light detection and ranging or LiDAR, uses optical laser pulses to create precise three-dimensional digital models of physical objects and buildings. Insurance companies increasingly adopt high-resolution aerial mapping to evaluate catastrophic damage across widespread disaster zones, reducing processing times from weeks to days.

TF1 is France's oldest and most watched private television network. Its morning news program, Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1, features regular segments on technological innovations, consumer tech, and national current affairs. Mbida serves as a technology contributor for the network, highlighting emerging digital solutions to everyday societal problems.

Robotic home reconstruction

Once insurance claims are processed, displaced residents face the challenge of finding long-term housing. Mbida highlighted a startup that offers to rebuild a destroyed home in just a few days by building directly over surviving structures.

The construction method relies on existing building foundations that survived the fire. Workers place an articulated robotic arm over the foundation, and the automated machine independently builds the walls, floors, and ceilings.

The building components are manufactured in a factory and shipped to the site as a complete kit. The robotic arm then handles the on-site assembly and mounting process automatically.

Automated modular construction combines off-site manufacturing with field robotics to accelerate home building. By prefabricating wall panels, flooring, and ceiling sections in controlled factory environments, construction teams avoid weather delays and reduce labor requirements. Robotic assembly arms follow pre-programmed architectural files to align structural components with high precision, making rapid housing recovery viable after natural disasters.

France experiences intense wildfire risks during hot summer months, particularly across southern regions and heavily forested pine woodlands. Wildfires can destroy homes, electrical grids, and municipal infrastructure within hours, leaving local authorities and homeowners searching for rapid rebuilding methods to restore communities before winter conditions set in.

Aerial seed drops for forest recovery

The final major challenge in post-fire recovery is replanting scorched forests and vegetation. While researchers have not found a way to make trees grow faster, companies are focusing on planting them much quicker across devastated landscapes.

Specialized companies have developed drones capable of mapping fire-ravaged terrain and firing seed balls directly into the soil. Mbida explained that each seed ball contains a seed along with water, nutrients, and fungi, providing everything required for the tree to restart growth.

Drone reforestation, also called seed bombing, uses automated aerial vehicles to restore degraded habitats that are difficult or unsafe for human planting crews to access on foot. Combining seeds with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi and moisture-retaining nutrients helps young seedlings establish roots in nutrient-depleted, heat-scarred soil.

Efforts to rebuild communities and restore scorched environments continue across France as public broadens adoption of these remote sensing, robotic, and aerial tools following summer fire disasters.
