French parents embrace AI for back-to-school preparations

A growing number of French families are integrating artificial intelligence into their children's school routines and back-to-school planning, according to a survey by data analytics firm Kantar published on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The study found that nearly three in four parents now support using artificial intelligence tools to assist their children with homework, provided the software acts as a learning guide rather than completing assignments for them.

Parents are also turning to artificial intelligence as a personal assistant to handle administrative tasks and reduce household spending ahead of the new school term.

According to the Kantar survey, titled The Adoption of AI in French Households, 49 percent of parents with children aged 6 to 18 plan to use artificial intelligence to compare prices and limit their back-to-school budgets.

The study also revealed that 48 percent of parents intend to use artificial intelligence software to assist with administrative procedures, while 45 percent plan to use it to identify durable, reusable or second-hand products.

Parental support for homework tools

The survey highlighted a broad openness among parents toward digital tools in education, accompanied by a clear desire for supervision. Exactly 74 percent of parents with children aged 6 to 18 said they accept artificial intelligence for homework assistance, provided it helps the child progress without doing the work in their place.

Cécile Lejeune, the president of Kantar France, said that families are not rejecting artificial intelligence but are assigning it a specific role. She explained that parents welcome technology when it explains concepts, provides practice, compares items or simplifies tasks, but draw the line when software does the work or makes decisions on behalf of the child.

Rise of generative artificial intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence models have gained widespread popularity among the general public over recent years. Platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Claude use machine learning to process natural language, answer questions, summarize information and assist users with daily tasks.

Kantar is a global market research and data analysis company that regularly tracks consumer trends and technology adoption across France. The firm's research indicates that artificial intelligence tools have transitioned from novel consumer software into functional tools for household management.

In France, the back-to-school period in late August is a major annual event for families managing educational expenses and administrative requirements for children aged 6 to 18, spanning primary and secondary schooling.
