Five concerts are scheduled across the Dominican Republic from July 31 to August 2, covering Spanish romantic pop, classical crossover, bachata, traditional merengue, and orchestral music.
Alex Ubago
Spanish singer-songwriter Alex Ubago returns to the Dominican Republic with his “¿Qué pides tú? 25 Aniversario” tour on Saturday, August 1, at 9:00 pm at Hard Rock Café Santo Domingo, BlueMall. The tour marks 25 years since the album that began his career and established him as one of the most recognizable voices in Spanish-language romantic pop. He aims to reconnect with audiences that have grown up singing his songs, among them “Sin miedo a nada,” “A gritos de esperanza,” “Aunque no te pueda ver,” “Me muero por conocerte,” and “¿Qué pides tú?” Tickets are available through Smart Ticket.
Stephany Ortega
Dominican soprano Stephany Ortega performs “Mi vida en canciones” on Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, at 10:00 pm at Café Teatro Juan Lockward in the Teatro Nacional. The show blends her classical training with Caribbean roots and pop through reinterpretations of songs ranging from major pop figures to urban artists, with pianist Manuel Tejada accompanying at both performances. Pavel Núñez and his Bipolarband
Pavel Núñez opens the weekend on Friday, July 31, at 9:00 pm at Hard Rock Café Santo Domingo, BlueMall, with his Bipolarband project, a band-orchestra format that moves between romantic and danceable material across bachata, salsa, merengue, and merengue típico. The concept drew a positive reception at the Premios Soberano gala. Special guests Maridalia Hernández, José Alberto “El Canario,” and Ariel Núñez are set to join him on stage. The evening is produced under the artistic direction of Concepto Atariva SDQ, led by producer Fiora Cruz.
A night of traditional merengue
Lungomare opens its August calendar on Saturday, August 1, at 9:00 pm with “Un baile para la historia,” an evening dedicated to traditional merengue. The Orquesta Santa Cecilia will perform hits by maestro Luis Alberti, while David Santana pays tribute to Los Magos de Félix del Rosario. Tickets are sold through Uepa Tickets.
Carnegie Hall’s youth orchestra
Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra 2 (NYO2), presented alongside Fundación Sinfonía, closes the weekend on Sunday, August 2, at 6:00 pm at Sala La Restauración in the Gran Teatro del Cibao, Santiago. The ensemble brings more than 90 American musicians between the ages of 14 and 16, conducted by Taiwanese-American director Mei-Ann Chen, with Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark as guest soloist. The program includes works by Arturo Márquez, Michael Torke, George Gershwin, and Ottorino Respighi.
