European Commission Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen has asked Meta and TikTok to increase vigilance and reinforce fact checking regarding the recent migration crisis in Ceuta.
Virkkunen, who oversees technological sovereignty, security and democracy, said in a social media message that she met with the platforms to address the situation in the Spanish autonomous city. She stated that platforms must act firmly to preserve digital space integrity during crises, adding that stronger cooperation with fact checking bodies is needed.
Monitoring of potential mass entry attempt
The European Commission stated on Thursday that it is closely monitoring social networks ahead of August 15. The date has circulated online as a potential new attempt at a mass entry into Ceuta.
Commission officials also noted that channels linked to Russia have amplified the migration crisis since July 30.
European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podestà insisted that many reports circulating online are unverified and that an unclear picture remains of current events in the region. She added that European officials maintain close contact with Spanish and Moroccan authorities.
