The Dominican Society of Physics has recognized Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, former rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, for his contributions to the development, teaching, and strengthening of physics in the Dominican Republic.
The distinction was presented during the official ceremony launching National Physicist Day at the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo, attended by academic leaders, researchers, teachers, students, and physics professionals.

Beltrán Crisóstomo, a meritorious professor in the School of Physics within the Faculty of Sciences at the university, received the recognition alongside Dr Emma Encarnación. The honor was conferred by the Board of Directors of the society to celebrate professionals who have made significant contributions to the discipline nationwide.
During the ceremony, the former rector read Presidential Decree No. 454-26, which officially establishes June 3 of each year as National Physicist Day.
The national initiative aims to recognize the work of physics professionals while advancing scientific outreach, strengthening physics education, and encouraging interest among younger generations in science and technology careers.
Institutional Organization
The ceremony was organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic through its Basic Sciences and Technology Commission. The activity was held with the support of the Dominican Society of Physics, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.
Dr Melvin Arias, coordinator of the Basic Sciences and Technology Commission at the science academy, highlighted the importance of establishing a national date dedicated to emphasizing the impact of physics on scientific, technological, and social development across the country.
Professor Juan Lulio Blanchard, former president of the Dominican Society of Physics, praised the contributions made by physics professionals in strategic national sectors. He noted their work in energy, health, education, research, innovation, and national defense.
Attendees and Memorial Tributes
The event brought together prominent academic and government officials, including Dr Domenica Abramo, secretary of the Basic Sciences and Technology Commission at the academy, and Dr Juan Francisco Viloria, viceminister of evaluation and accreditation at the higher education ministry.
Other attendees included Dr Raysa Vásquez, vice dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the university, Dr Inna Samson, president of the physics society, and Evelin Álvarez, director of the School of Physics at the university. Japanese theoretical physicist Kazuo Tanaka participated as a special guest.
Gathering participants also observed a minute of silence to remember deceased members of the Dominican Society of Physics and other professionals, honoring their scientific legacy and contributions to national development.
