Renewable energy installer Dwellow has launched Grid Insights, a free interactive online dashboard that shows how Britain is being powered in real time and identifies the cleanest half-hour for electricity use over the next 24 hours.
The tool tracks real-time generation from wind, solar, nuclear and fossil fuels, while forecasting how the national energy mix will shift throughout the day. By identifying periods of peak renewable generation, the service allows households to schedule power-intensive chores, such as charging electric vehicles or running heat pumps, when electricity is at its cleanest.

Adam Raw, co-founder of green-tech company Dwellow, said: "Whether you're charging an electric vehicle, running a heat pump or simply putting the washing on, understanding when electricity is at its greenest is becoming an increasingly valuable piece of information."
Users accessing the Grid Insights site see a main dashboard displaying current grid cleanliness, exact energy sources and a dedicated forecast for the greenest upcoming time window. The platform also records historical energy milestones, including Britain's greenest-ever half-hour, its windiest day and its highest day for solar power generation.
In addition to live generation data, the dashboard monitors changes in carbon intensity over time and tracks the exact duration Britain has gone without burning coal for electricity generation. On Friday, August 14, solar panels across the country were supplying nearly a third of Britain's total electricity demand.

Carbon intensity measures the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced. In the United Kingdom, power grid emissions fluctuate constantly depending on weather conditions, overall demand and the balance of generation sources feeding into the high-voltage transmission network managed by the System Operator.
National shift toward renewable energy
The launch of Grid Insights comes during a period of structural transformation across the British energy sector as reliance on fossil fuels declines. Renewable sources generated a record 52.5 per cent of the UK's electricity in 2025, driven by unprecedented output from both onshore and offshore wind farms alongside solar installations.
Britain also recently recorded historic periods where fossil fuels accounted for just 2 per cent of national electricity generation, marking the lowest level since official record-keeping began. Commenting on the utility of real-time monitoring, Mr Raw said: "It's fascinating to see how Britain is being powered in real time, but it's also genuinely useful."

He added: "As more homes electrify over the coming decade, people won't just think about how much electricity they use, but when they use it."
Electrification refers to replacing fossil-fuel systems with electric alternatives, such as switching from gas boilers to heat pumps or from petrol cars to electric vehicles. Heat pumps extract ambient heat from the air or ground, operating at high efficiency but increasing a household's total electrical consumption.
Smart tariffs and household bill savings
Because wind speeds and sunshine levels vary significantly hour by hour, the volume of clean electricity fed into the grid undergoes frequent shifts. Aligning high-energy appliance usage with peak generation periods can help lower overall carbon emissions while reducing strain on grid infrastructure.
As flexible energy tariffs become more widely available across Britain, timing electricity consumption is expected to help consumers save money. Smart tariffs adjust rates throughout the day based on wholesale energy prices, charging lower prices when renewable generation is abundant and higher rates during periods of peak national demand.
Flexible energy tariffs require a smart meter, which automatically sends half-hourly electricity usage data to energy suppliers. This half-hourly tracking enables dynamic pricing structures that reward consumers for shifting their energy use away from traditional peak hours in the evening.
Practical tips for cutting electricity consumption
Beyond timing appliance use, industry experts have highlighted several practical methods for households to lower energy consumption and reduce utility bills. One primary recommendation is completely turning off appliances such as televisions and radios at the wall socket, preventing continuous energy drain from standby mode.
Adjusting laundry habits can also yield measurable savings. According to the Energy Saving Trust, washing clothes at 30°C consumes 40 per cent less electricity over the course of a year compared to higher temperature settings. Additionally, choosing to air dry laundry requires no electricity at all when compared to running an electric tumble dryer.

Leaving smartphones plugged into chargers overnight consumes unnecessary power, as the average smartphone requires approximately one hour and a half to reach a full charge. Experts suggest shifting charging routines to daytime hours, such as early morning or upon returning home from work.
Finally, reducing personal hot water use can significantly cut household energy bills. Cutting shower duration to four minutes provides notable cost reductions, particularly in homes where occupants customarily take longer showers.
