Greek singer Dimitris Kokotas will be laid to rest in Agia Varvara on Friday, August 28, following his death at the age of 57.

Kokotas passed away on Tuesday, August 25, after being hospitalized for more than two years at Georgios Gennimatas Hospital. He had been receiving treatment following an acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest.

The funeral service will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the Church of Panagia Eleousa in Agia Varvara, according to an official announcement published on Facebook by the Municipality of Agia Varvara on Wednesday, August 26. Relatives, friends, and professional associates will gather to accompany the singer to his final resting place.

Municipal Honors and Memorial Tributes

The Municipality of Agia Varvara confirmed that the funeral will be conducted at municipal expense under existing legal provisions. Municipal officials held a unanimous vote to observe a minute of silence and ordered the municipal flag to fly at half-mast until the day of burial.

The full Municipal Council, led by its president and the mayor, will attend the funeral service to lay a wreath. In addition, council members agreed to establish an annual scholarship in the name of Dimitris Kokotas at the Municipal Conservatory. The event hall inside the Mitros Soulimiotis Mansion at the conservatory will also be named in his memory.

As a mark of respect, local authorities decided to postpone all municipal cultural events scheduled for September. The events will be rescheduled for a later date following the completion of his 40-day memorial service.

Tributes and Family Remembrances

Following his passing, his wife spoke of her dedication during his prolonged hospitalization, stating that when you love someone the word sacrifice does not exist and that she could not imagine failing to visit the hospital every day. The couple originally met after an autograph request developed into love at first sight, and they share a daughter.

Greek singer Kaiti Garbi also paid tribute to her colleague, noting that while friends and fellow performers had been hoping for a miracle, she was now bidding farewell to a wonderful human being and beloved coworker.

Agia Varvara is a suburban municipality located in the western region of the Athens urban area. Dimitris Kokotas was a popular Greek pop and laiko singer who achieved widespread success during the 1990s and 2000s.
