Combining strength training with aerobic exercise provides significantly greater protection against chronic diseases than relying on cardio workouts alone, according to a major study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

Researchers tracked more than 8,000 residents in Australia aged 40 to 64 over a nine-year period to assess how different forms of physical activity influence long-term health outcomes.

The study compared adults who regularly engaged in only aerobic exercises, only strength training, or a combination of both physical activities against individuals who performed almost no exercise. The strongest protective health effects were recorded among participants who maintained both cardio and resistance routines.

Participants who met recommended targets for both types of activity reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 50 percent compared to inactive individuals. The dual-activity group also achieved a 24 percent reduction in the risk of hypertension and a 23 percent lower risk of developing certain types of cancer.

Scientists noted that the health benefits associated with strength training extended beyond the protective effects supplied by aerobic exercise alone. Although standard lifestyle guidelines traditionally emphasize cardiovascular training, the study authors stressed that muscle-strengthening exercises are equally essential for health maintenance.

Understanding Strength and Aerobic Exercises

Aerobic exercises, often referred to as cardio, involve continuous physical activities such as running, brisk walking, cycling, or swimming that elevate the heart rate and enhance oxygen consumption over time. Strength training, by contrast, relies on muscle resistance to build strength, muscle mass, and metabolic resilience.

The study noted that effective strength training includes workouts using free weights, resistance bands, or an individual's own body weight. Common bodyweight movements include squats, push-ups, and lunges, which require no specialized equipment and can be performed in domestic settings.

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, occurring when the body becomes resistant to insulin or fails to produce sufficient amounts. Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against arterial walls remains consistently too high, posing a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.

Broader Evidence on Physical Activity

Public health organizations, including the World Health Organization, recommend that adults perform regular muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups on two or more days a week, alongside weekly aerobic exercise. Combining both exercise modes is widely regarded by fitness professionals as the most comprehensive strategy for maintaining muscular function, metabolic health, and vascular integrity during aging.

The findings reinforce broader medical research emphasizing that regular physical movement lowers long-term health risks across adult populations. Earlier research highlighted in the report showed that adding just 15 extra minutes of movement to a daily routine reduces the risk of developing cancer by 2 percent.

The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport is a peer-reviewed medical publication covering exercise science, sports medicine, and physical health. Health experts note that combining cardiovascular conditioning with strength work provides a balanced approach to mitigating age-related chronic health conditions.
