Polychlorinated biphenyls have been detected in Chinese tea samples across 16 provinces, according to a study published in the journal New Contaminants.
Researchers analyzed 192 samples covering green, black, dark, white, yellow and oolong varieties, discovering chemical traces in every specimen tested. However, calculated dietary intake remains significantly below safety thresholds, meaning standard tea consumption poses no noticeable risk to human health.

Contamination levels across tea varieties
The study revealed distinct variations in chemical concentrations depending on the type of tea and its geographic origin. Dark tea varieties contained the highest average concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls, while yellow tea registered the lowest average levels.
Samples collected from industrially developed regions in China showed higher levels of contamination more frequently than those from rural area batches. While leaf processing appeared to slightly increase concentrations of individual chemical compounds, researchers noted that the increase was not statistically significant. Consequently, environmental exposure remains the primary pathway for contamination.
Industrial legacy of chemical pollutants
Polychlorinated biphenyls, commonly known as PCBs, belong to a class of synthetic organic chemicals that were manufactured extensively during the 20th century. Used as coolants, electrical insulators and industrial lubricants, these substances are classified as persistent organic pollutants because they resist natural environmental degradation.
Although international agreements and national regulations restricted PCB production decades ago, the compounds break down very slowly and linger for years in soil, water and air. Because they are fat-soluble, PCBs can accumulate over time in plant tissues and animal food chains. Legacy industrial sites, old equipment and certain manufacturing processes continue to release trace amounts into local ecosystems.
Chinese tea production and health context
China is the world's largest producer of tea, growing millions of tonnes each year across major agricultural regions including Yunnan, Zhejiang, Fujian and Sichuan. Tea plants, known scientifically as Camellia sinensis, absorb minerals and airborne particles through their roots and leaves, making crops sensitive to local environmental conditions.
Despite detecting PCBs across all tested samples, the study authors concluded that normal consumption of Chinese tea does not pose a health hazard. The estimated intake of these substances from drinking tea fell well below allowable safety limits, although the researchers recommended that food safety authorities maintain routine monitoring of chemical pollutants in agricultural products.
The research adds to ongoing scientific inquiries into the dietary effects of tea. Previous studies have noted that regular consumption of green tea may help protect brain function against damage associated with obesity.
