Increasing bright indoor lighting improves sleep, boosts daytime activity, and supports normal daily rhythms in older adults, scientists reported in the Journal of Pineal Research.
The study evaluated more than 200 participants aged between 63 and 92 to examine how controlled illumination levels influence sleep quality and daily rest routines in older populations.
Researchers monitored participants during an initial two-week observation period before providing a group of volunteers with specialised light therapy lamps. The trial required participants to use the lamps for 12 weeks, turning them on within one hour of waking in the morning and turning them off at least four hours before going to sleep.
Tracking light exposure and rest patterns
To ensure precise data collection, researchers tracked illumination levels, physical movement, and rest patterns using dedicated sensor devices worn by the volunteers throughout the trial.
Data from the trial showed that earlier exposure to bright light in the morning correlated directly with higher daytime activity levels and a more stable sleep-wake pattern. In addition, volunteers who received greater amounts of natural light were on average more physically active during daytime hours, experienced fewer sleep schedule disruptions, and reported better overall sleep quality.

As people age, natural changes in sleep architecture frequently lead to fragmented night-time rest and increased daytime fatigue. Older adults, particularly those with reduced mobility or who reside in care facilities, often spend prolonged periods indoors with minimal access to direct sunlight. Dim daytime environments can weaken internal biological signals, making it harder for the body to distinguish between waking hours and sleep times.
Non-pharmacological solutions for healthy aging
The study authors concluded that supplementary indoor lighting could provide a simple, low-cost, non-pharmacological method for supporting older adult health. They noted that bright indoor lights are particularly beneficial for individuals who rarely venture outdoors and consequently receive minimal exposure to natural sunlight during the day.
Non-pharmacological interventions are non-drug health measures designed to manage symptoms or promote wellness without pharmaceutical side effects. Sleep medications in elderly populations can carry risks such as morning confusion, motor impairment, and medication dependency. Environmental adjustments like phototherapy offer a safer alternative by utilizing the body natural response to light stimuli.
