Belarus has established local repair facilities for its Tor-M2K surface-to-air missile systems through a joint initiative with Russian defence manufacturers, state officials announced on Sunday.
The State Military Industrial Committee of the Republic of Belarus announced on Telegram that the first battery of combat vehicles has already been delivered to the repair workshop to undergo capital overhauls.
The specialized service facility was implemented by Belarusian defence enterprise 2566 Plant for Repair of Radio-Electronic Armament in cooperation with the Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant. Throughout the development process, Belarusian engineers collaborated closely with major Russian defence contractors, including the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation and the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol.
Upgrading Belarusian air defence capabilities
Work at the new workshop will focus on conducting capital repairs on 9A331MK combat vehicles, which form the operational core of the Tor-M2K surface-to-air missile systems deployed by the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus.
The State Military Industrial Committee said that establishing local maintenance capabilities would significantly shorten equipment restoration times for the national armed forces. Officials added that mastering capital repair procedures for modern, complex systems will provide essential technical expertise and establish a foundation for modernising other weapon systems across the country.
The 2566 Plant for Repair of Radio-Electronic Armament, based in Borisov, Belarus, specializes in maintaining military radar and electronic defence systems. Partnering enterprise Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant produces heavy multi-axle off-road chassis designed to transport heavy military payloads and missile launchers.
Background on the Tor missile architecture
The Tor-M2K is a mobile, short-range surface-to-air missile system engineered to intercept low-altitude aerial threats, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, precision-guided munitions, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Unlike tracked variants, the Tor-M2K uses a wheeled chassis manufactured by the Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant, providing high road mobility and flexible deployment capabilities for military units.
Russian arms conglomerate Almaz-Antey is the primary state developer of air defence systems in Russia, while its subsidiary, the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol in the Udmurt Republic, serves as the primary production facility for the Tor air defence family.
Naval developments and future production
The establishment of the Belarusian repair facility follows ongoing developments involving the broader Tor missile architecture. In June, Dmitry Zakhar, an assistant to the general director of the Kupol plant, reported that the manufacturer had developed an autonomous combat module designated as the Tor-M2KM for service with the Russian Navy.
