Modern Barbie and Ken dolls have undergone a significant reality check, with their physical proportions becoming markedly more realistic than earlier generations, according to a study by scientists at Adelaide University.

Researchers analysed the physical measurements of four recent Barbie dolls and the latest Ken doll, finding that key body ratios now fall within normal ranges for human anatomy, with the Curvy Barbie model matching today's average woman most closely.

The findings mark a notable shift from the original dolls created by toy manufacturer Mattel. Previous anatomical research revealed that the original 1959 Barbie possessed proportions so extreme that a real woman built to the same dimensions would be unable to lift her head and would have to crawl on all fours.

Barbie debuted in 1959 and Ken in 1961, becoming two of the most recognizable cultural icons globally. Lead study author Dr Sara Grafenauer noted that for many children, the dolls provide an early and influential representation of adult bodies.

"Barbie and Ken are among the most recognisable cultural icons globally, and for many children, they're an early and influential representation of what bodies of adults 'should' look like," Dr Grafenauer said. "But traditional Barbie and Ken dolls have always had unrealistic and statistically improbable body shapes. In fact, the original dolls' body shapes were so extreme that less than one in 10 million people could match their proportions."

To evaluate whether those extreme proportions persist today, the Adelaide University researchers measured the physical dimensions of four dolls from the modern Fashionista lineup: Curvy, Tall, Petite, and Standard, as well as the latest Ken doll. They then compared those measurements to anatomical data from young men and women aged 18 to 35.

The specific measurements evaluated included the head, neck, chest, waist, hip, thigh, mid-thigh, calf, ankle, upper arm, forearm, and wrist. Using these measurements, the research team calculated key anatomical indicators including waist-to-hip, chest-to-waist, and chest-to-hip ratios.

Realistic waist ratios and remaining male exaggerations

The results revealed that the waist-to-hip and chest-to-waist ratios of modern dolls are now much closer to those observed in real people. In particular, Curvy Barbie closely matched today's average female body proportions.

Dr Grafenauer explained: "Our study found that Barbie and Ken's body proportions today have become markedly more realistic, with waist-to-hip and chest-to-waist measurements now falling within the normal range for key female body proportions, albeit still below the typical female averages."

However, the study found that male doll proportions have not evolved evenly. "Interestingly, while Ken's overall body shape has become more realistic, some proportions, particularly his chest-to-waist ratio, remain less representative of the average man," Dr Grafenauer added.

The Fashionista line was launched as part of efforts to reflect human diversity, incorporating multiple body shapes, seven skin tones, and various hairstyles across the toy line.

Reassurance for parents and calls for further diversity

Study co-author Professor Kevin Norton highlighted the broader public health implications for parents and educators selecting toys. "The positive changes we're seeing in Barbie and Ken's body shapes should provide some reassurance for health professionals and parents choosing these dolls," Professor Norton said.

"The greater diversity we're seeing is a positive step that better reflects the people children see around them every day. We know Barbie and Ken are promoted as aspirational role models, so it makes sense that their body shapes and proportions are meaningful to those who play with them."

Co-author Belinda Durey stressed the role toys play in early childhood development and body image perception. "Children's toys do more than entertain, they help shape perceptions of bodies, health and identity. The more those toys reflect the diversity of real people, the more positive that influence can be," Durey said.

"The introduction of multiple body shapes is a positive step. Continued diversification, including variation in size, shape and proportion, can better reflect real populations. There's no doubt that today's Barbie and Ken are still stylised, but they're substantially closer to average human body proportions than earlier generations, and that's a step in the right direction."

The researchers are calling for continued diversification across children's toy lines. Toy maker Mattel was contacted for comment.
