A new generation of fully autonomous robotic lawnmowers equipped with 360-degree radar, satellite navigation, and optical cameras is entering the consumer market to manage complex gardens without human supervision, technology columnist Anicet Mbida reported on French television channel TF1.
Speaking on the morning news show Bonjour! La Matinale TF1, Mbida explained that the updated machines can map outdoor grounds down to the millimeter, automatically steering around obstacles while deploying articulated arms and built-in miniature string trimmers to cut grass along walls, paths, and borders.
The seasonal arrival of these devices coincides with returning rainfall and declining temperatures across Western Europe, which signal the optimal period for autumn lawn care. While consumer technology has automated indoor housework over the past decade through robotic vacuum cleaners, connected refrigerators, and washing machines powered by artificial intelligence, outdoor lawn maintenance has long remained reliant on manual effort.
Advanced sensors eliminate perimeter wires and manual prep
Earlier generations of robotic mowers provided automated cutting but suffered from severe operational constraints in typical residential gardens, according to Mbida. Existing devices struggle when operating in yards filled with trees, hedges, flower pots, or decorative garden items, requiring a large, completely open space to function effectively without stopping.
Because current models frequently become trapped behind obstacles, homeowners must constantly monitor their operation. Mbida noted that users are effectively forced to guide the small mowers constantly, clearing stray objects beforehand, freeing trapped machines, and manually finishing edges.
Historically, robotic lawnmowers required homeowners to lay perimeter boundary wires around garden edges to prevent machines from straying into flowerbeds or off property lines. The incoming models replace underground wiring with multi-sensor spatial mapping, combining 360-degree radar scanning with GPS positioning and optical cameras to distinguish grass turf from hedges, stone walkways, and paved terraces in real time.
Articulated arms and mini string trimmers tackle edging
To address hard-to-reach edges, equipment manufacturers have introduced specialized mechanical attachments. The latest models come fitted with articulated robotic arms and mini string trimmers, known in French lawn care as mini-rotofiles, engineered to perform cleanup tasks and cut vegetation flush against garden walls, fences, and driveway borders.
String trimmers utilize high-speed spinning nylon line to slice through grass near hard structures where standard rotary mower blades cannot safely reach. Mbida emphasized that requiring homeowners to perform manual trimming after operating an automated mower undermines the fundamental purpose of owning a robotic appliance designed for autonomous outdoor care.
