Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12, introducing an upgraded Health Sensing System, an S11 custom processor chip, and new artificial intelligence capabilities powered by Apple Intelligence.
The device represents the company's latest generation smartwatch, focusing heavily on health monitoring and body recovery metrics. The flagship addition is the Health Sensing System, which delivers more frequent readings of heart rate and heart rate variability.
Apple said the Series 12 provides the most accurate heart rate measurement of any wearable device on the market. The smartwatch monitors heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while measuring heart rate variability up to 24 times more frequently than previous models.
The device also introduces separate vital parameter metrics tailored specifically for daytime and nighttime monitoring.
Heart rate variability, commonly abbreviated as HRV, measures the slight fluctuations in time between consecutive heartbeats. Medical researchers and sports scientists use HRV data to assess physiological stress levels, fatigue, and autonomic nervous system activity. Wrist-based wearables typically track these metrics using optical sensors that detect micro-changes in blood volume under the skin.
Body readiness tracking and scoring
A primary feature of the new smartwatch is Readiness, an automated scoring system that rates physical preparedness on a scale from 0 to 10. The score is calculated using recent physical activity, cumulative training load, overall health metrics, and sleep data.
Based on the calculated rating, the watch offers practical operational guidance for the user. It advises individuals whether to focus on recovery, slow down their physical pace, maintain their usual daily routine, or increase their workout intensity.
The Apple Watch Series 12 also features improved battery life during exercise routines. The device supports up to 10 hours of continuous workout tracking, which Apple stated is a 25 percent increase over the previous generation.
Battery replenishment is also faster on the new model. A 15-minute charge supplies up to 12 hours of additional device operation. Furthermore, Apple updated the pedometer algorithm to enhance the precision of step counts and distance tracking.
Audio recognition and conversation summaries
Beyond health metrics, the Series 12 includes acoustic features capable of identifying critical ambient sounds. The device can recognize environmental noises such as emergency sirens, alarm clocks, doorbells, and a crying baby.
For spoken conversations, a new feature called Live Rewind displays a transcript of the preceding 15 seconds of audio. Another feature named Siri Recap generates concise written summaries of recent conversations.
Addressing privacy concerns, Apple stated that audio recordings processed by these features are neither generated nor stored on the device or remote servers.
Smartwatches rely on embedded microphones and localized machine learning algorithms to process sound patterns without transmitting raw audio files. Apple's custom processor chips allow these tasks to run directly on the device to maintain user privacy.
Pricing, design options and product releases
Apple Watch Series 12 is offered in two case sizes measuring 42 millimeters and 46 millimeters across. The aluminum casing models are available in Dark Bronze, Black, Light Gold, and Space Gray.
For customers seeking premium materials, titanium models come in Radiant Gold and Natural Titanium finishes. Apple is also offering a ceramic edition crafted in Pearl White and Night Blue.
Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 12 opened on September 9, with official retail sales scheduled to begin on September 18. United States pricing for the smartwatch starts at $399.
Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, California, announced the smartwatch alongside other updated devices.
