Greek singer Apostolia Zoi has visited the disappearing island of Nakupenda in Zanzibar and shared details of her excursion on social media on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The singer published photographs from her boat trip across the Indian Ocean on Instagram, explaining how the tidal sandbar emerges for only a few hours each day before submerging under water every afternoon.
Zoi noted that the location is named Nakupenda, which means I love you in Swahili, joking that the sandbar performs a ghosting act when the tide rises.
Visiting Nakupenda Sandbar
Outlining a survival guide for prospective visitors, Zoi recommended boarding a traditional dhow boat from Stone Town to reach the sandbank, adding humorously that travelers should pray they do not forget sunscreen.
Zoi described popular activities at the destination, including snorkeling alongside fish, diving into exotic waters, and enjoying a seafood barbecue on the beach.
Urging visitors to bring a hat and sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, Zoi warned that the sun at Nakupenda is intense and noted that the sandbar offers no trees for shade.
Zoi added that while contact with nature heals everything, science gives up if a traveler suffers a sunburn, suggesting jokingly that visitors apply yogurt in that situation.
