Anthony Hopkins to Star in Post-Apocalyptic Film 2048

Actor Anthony Hopkins is set to star in 2048, a new post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.

The project marks a quick reunion for the two-time Oscar winner and Woodward, who recently completed work on the sci-fi horror feature Eyes In The Trees, currently in post-production.

The casting and project details were first reported by the entertainment publication Deadline on September 10, 2026.

Underground Dystopia and Resistance

The story of 2048 is set in a bleak future where a dying planet has forced the remaining remnants of humanity to take refuge underground.

Humanity lives within a massive subterranean society controlled by the Collective, an authoritarian regime that regulates nearly every aspect of daily life and has erased all memories of the world on the surface.

The narrative focuses on Wesley, a worker whose life is upended after he becomes involved with a secret resistance organization that questions the doctrines taught by the Collective.

As Wesley searches for the truth, he attracts the attention of Bryant, played by Hopkins. Bryant is the brilliant and ruthless architect of the Collective who maintains control over society through surveillance, manipulation, and psychological terror.

Hopkins on Complex Characters

Hopkins said that having recently worked with Woodward as a director, he felt it would be interesting to find another script to shoot together.

He noted that after various proposals and ideas were discussed for a period of time, the script for 2048 emerged directly from those conversations.

The actor described the story as complex and fascinating, explaining that it touches on the mysterious contradictions hidden within human nature.

He said the narrative explores humanity's capacity for extraordinary creative achievements and compassion alongside the mystery of human cruelty.

Hopkins added that Bryant is an equally complex character who is intelligent, restrained, and terrifying in the absolute certainty with which he perceives the world. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Woodward again to bring the story to the screen.

Director on Freedom and Control

Woodward said that collaborating with Hopkins once more was a dream come true, describing him as one of the greatest actors of the era.

The director stated that Hopkins brings great depth, intelligence, and a quiet intensity to every role, making him the ideal fit for the character of Bryant.

He added that at its core, 2048 is a story about freedom, control, and one man's struggle to discover the truth.

Acclaimed Careers and Next Steps

Hopkins is an acclaimed Welsh actor who has won two Academy Awards for Best Actor, receiving his first Oscar for playing Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs and his second for the 2020 drama The Father.

Woodward is an American film director and producer whose previous work includes directing genre features such as Gangster Land and The Call.

Production on 2048 follows the completion of post-production on the filmmaking duo's previous sci-fi horror feature, Eyes In The Trees.
