Anthony Hamilton, the father of seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, sold 27 cars from his private collection over the weekend for almost £2.9 million.
The cars, largely British icons, were offered to the highest bidder on Sunday at the Iconic Auctioneers British Racing Drivers' Club Classic Sale at Silverstone. They attracted interest from international collectors.
The biggest earner was Hamilton's low-mileage 1993 Jaguar XJ220, which sold for £506,250, a UK auction record. The car is one of only 69 UK-supplied, right-hand-drive examples and had covered just 3,277 miles from new, remaining with its previous owner for almost 25 years.
Finished in Silverstone Green Metallic over light tan leather, the XJ220 had an exceptional service history including regular maintenance by Jaguar Classic. It received bids from around the world as well as from enthusiasts in the room, and one of the in-room bidders bought the car.
Five further cars from the collection achieved six-figure results. A 2007 Jaguar XKSS recreation, one of the hand-built tool-room copies of the ultra-rare 1957 D-Type built by Jaguar around 20 years ago, sold for £400,000, some £25,000 above its upper estimate.
An ultra-rare 2016 David Brown Automotive Speedback GT, one of only 100 built and with just 354 miles from new, sold for £202,500, making it the third-highest-value car in the sale.
A pair of 2016 Jaguar C-Type recreations, produced to emulate the 1951 racers, also made big money, fetching £192,000 and £190,000.
Hamilton also parted with a pristine 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL, finished in white over navy blue leather and showing little use since its restoration, for £104,625.
A 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre Roadster, comprehensively restored and converted to right-hand drive after originally being supplied through Jaguar Cars New York, sold for £119,250, almost £20,000 above its upper estimate.
Record for modernised Mini
Also notable was the sale of Hamilton's 1997 David Brown Mini Remastered, number 29 of the David Brown production run. It sold for £92,250, a new world record for one of these vehicles.
Rob Hubbard, managing director of Iconic Auctioneers and the auctioneer on Sunday, said his team had worked closely with Hamilton to secure the best prices possible.
