An American college student visiting his girlfriend in the Philippines expressed outrage after her family expected him to pay for their meals, accommodation, and child supplies.
Writing under the username ihadnolunchtoday on the social news platform Reddit, the visitor explained that he had paid for a hotel room for himself and his partner, only to find her 27-year-old sister and her boyfriend staying with them.
The situation escalated when his girlfriend requested that he purchase diapers for her sister and her boyfriend's young son. Shortly afterwards, she asked him to pay for the couple's meals as well, arguing that food in the Southeast Asian country was inexpensive and virtually cost nothing.
Financial strain and family expectations
The student noted that while he earns an income, he only works part-time because he is still enrolled in college. Although he has some savings, he stated that he had no desire to spend money supporting adults who are several years older than him.
He expressed particular resentment at paying for two adult meals, pointing out that one of the guests was an adult man. While acknowledging that the minimum wage in the Philippines is low, he observed that his girlfriend's parents possess financial resources and her sister operates her own salon.
In his post, the visitor questioned how parents could travel without bringing essential supplies for their child, asking other forum members whether expecting him to cover these costs was a local cultural trait, or if he was being selfish or a fool.
