United Airlines will fly nine new nonstop transatlantic routes on the Airbus A321XLR, with the first flights scheduled to commence on December 1. The major US carrier has ordered 50 of the long-range single-aisle aircraft to launch transatlantic services connecting North America to lesser-visited European destinations, including Marseille in southern France and Ljubljana in Slovenia.
The Airbus A321XLR is designed to transform long-haul travel by flying routes of up to 11 hours while carrying fewer passengers than traditional wide-body jets. Although the aircraft type can seat up to 244 people in a dense layout, United has configured its planes for just 150 passengers to offer a more spacious cabin experience.
European aerospace manufacturer Airbus developed the A321XLR as an extended-range variant of its A321 narrow-body airliner family. Narrow-body or single-aisle aircraft have traditionally been limited to short-haul domestic and regional routes due to fuel capacity limits. By adding a modified fuselage and an extra fuel tank, Airbus engineered a narrow-body plane capable of flying intercontinental routes previously restricted to larger twin-aisle wide-body aircraft.
Cabin features and passenger comfort
United designed its A321XLR configuration to serve as the airline's most premium narrow-body airplane. The aircraft features 32 premium seats, which is 16 more than the older Boeing 757 aircraft it replaces in the fleet. The premium section includes a new United Polaris suite that provides all-aisle access, a fully lie-flat bed, and an individual privacy door for business class travelers.
In-flight entertainment has been updated across all travel classes, with every seat equipped with a large 4K OLED screen featuring Bluetooth connectivity. Screen sizes range from 19 inches in the United Polaris suite to 16 inches in the United Premium Plus cabin and 13 inches in United Economy.
To improve convenience, United expanded overhead storage bins to offer 60 per cent more space for passenger luggage compared to previous cabin designs. Economy passengers also gain access to a dedicated self-serve snack bar located in the rear of the cabin. In addition, all passengers have access to in-seat connectivity and an upgraded cabin lighting system designed to enhance comfort during long flights.
Fuel efficiency and environmental goals
The A321XLR delivers a 30 per cent reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft. This drop in fuel consumption directly lowers carbon dioxide emissions while also reducing the noise footprint of flights during takeoff and landing.
Improving fuel efficiency is a central goal for the commercial aviation industry as airlines seek to lower operating costs and reduce carbon emissions. All Airbus aircraft are currently certified to operate using up to a 50 per cent blend of sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF, which is produced from renewable waste materials rather than conventional petroleum. Airbus aims to make its entire aircraft lineup capable of operating on 100 per cent SAF by 2030 to support global aviation sustainability targets.
Global adoption by major carriers
United is part of a growing wave of international airlines introducing the A321XLR into commercial service. Ireland's national carrier Aer Lingus became the second airline in the world to operate the A321XLR in 2024. The Irish carrier operates the narrow-body plane with 16 business class seats and 168 economy seats on long-haul routes.
In the Aer Lingus economy cabin, each seat is 18 inches wide for added passenger space and features a 12-inch high-definition touchscreen. Business class passengers receive lie-flat beds alongside an 18-inch 4K ultra-high-definition touchscreen.
Several other international airlines have also taken delivery of their first A321XLR planes, including Canada's flag carrier Air Canada and Saudia, the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia. Other global airlines, including Qantas, Wizz Air, and American Airlines, are also set to fly commercial routes using the new aircraft model.
