Afghan man arrested over British woman found in suitcase in Athens

Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old Afghan national in connection with the murder of a 38-year-old British woman whose body was found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens on 18 July 2026.

The Organized Crime Division identified the suspect after forensic specialists recovered usable fingerprints from the victim’s body despite advanced decomposition and difficult environmental conditions. Greek police said the prints were matched to a British citizen after U.S. authorities were contacted through the Hellenic Police Interpol unit.

Investigators determined that the victim entered Greece on 26 June 2026 and stayed at a private residence in Piraeus until 10 July 2026, after which she left for an unknown destination within the Attica region.

Digital analysis of surveillance footage led police to the suspect, who was brought in for questioning on 30 July 2026 and, according to police, confessed. He was found to have used the victim’s bank cards to make cash withdrawals in the days after the killing. A replica pistol and a knife were seized from his home, resulting in an additional weapons charge.

Greek police said the investigation was conducted in cooperation with a liaison officer from the UK National Crime Agency and Police Service of Scotland. The suspect has been referred to the relevant prosecutor.
