A wildfire in the Var department of southern France has been contained for now, with the fire perimeter showing no expansion overnight, according to a report published Sunday.
Nearly 1,500 firefighters remain mobilized across the area, working to neutralize hotspots and secure the edges of the blaze. Early Sunday morning, crews carried out precision water drops over the department.
The priority for fire crews is to hold the advantage they have gained, with the fire remaining highly localized. The containment was achieved in part through the use of firebreak barriers that firefighters call verrous, as well as the involvement of volunteers on the ground.
The battle, however, is described as far from over.
